Welcome to the Ion Newsletter. While the content this Quarter features some recent events from the past three months, we are actually playing ‘catch up’. For instance we have had the Quick Reference Guide for a number of years - much to the delight and relief of many clients
and we started the Duty of Care many months ago.
Thank You All…………..
This year’s “Legionella Awareness Day” Seminar was well attended and well received. An increase in quality, entertaining delivery, as well attendance lead to an overwhelmingly successful and positive day for Ion Water.
Firstly, a thank you to our location organisers, Hampden Park Stadium for a very sizeable and favourable setting in which we were able to conduct our seminar. This was an ideal place for us to hold an event like this and we are very grateful to Hampden Park that we were allowed to have Ion Water and Environmental Management Ltd attend there.
Thanks also goes out to our main speaker Mr. David Harper. David’s unique style and presentation held our attention and ensured our attendees were fully engrossed. I’m sure all attendees were able to get a ‘one of a kind’ look into Legionella and match it up to their respective businesses and occupations. This was demonstrated through the insight they gave at the Q & A's session.
A large amount of gratitude must also go out as well to Pall and Quarterback for their presentations which we hope left a lasting image in your minds. I shall in the very near future, place further details and information of the Pall products and the Quarterback system into the Ion website. Remember, every time you get an email from us click on to the ‘ION LOGO’. There is a mine of information there….
A special thanks also to Mr. Ian Drain for his organisational skills and patience as well as our other volunteers, who helped make things go as smoothly as possible at Hampden, not in the least the ‘ION Ladies’ who ensured everyone was registered and all your needs were attended to.
Last but most definitely not least, a tremendous amount of recognition and thanks must go out to our attendees. The huge amount of support and encouragement we received from you made it well worth our time and effort. A lot of our current success must be credited to those who have stuck with us and we hope to have retained all of those who were behind us and in the process we hope to have attained even more backing from those who are new to Ion Water Ltd.
Thank you again to all those groups listed above who made our ‘Big Day’ a great one.
All enquiries welcome.
Mr. Paul Harris
Managing Director

Top Safety Accreditation for ION Water Limited
ION is one of the latest group of successful companies to join a leading edge scheme, designed to help industry improve its safety record. The North Lanarkshire-based firm recently received accreditation from SAFEcontractor, a programme which recognises very high standards of health and safety practise amongst UK contractors.
Employing over 25 people, ION is principally involved in the control of Legionella Bacteria in water systems complying with and adhering to the Legionnaires’ Disease Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) L8 requirements and Guidelines.
Specialising in both Industrial and Commercial sectors including Leisure, Retail, NHS and Educational institutions and with a circ £2 million turnover, ION’s most recent clients have included major players such as; Turner Estate Solutions Ltd. (formerly Amec Turner), Dalkia, Mitie, Amey plc, several Public Bodies and Councils and Major UK Property Managers,
The company’s application for SAFEcontractor accreditation was driven by the need for a uniform standard across the business.
Safecontractor is operated by international safety, health and environmental risk management specialists, the National Britannia Group one of UK’s largest independent safety, health and environmental risk management specialists, employing a total of 450 people within its UK operations. The system is applicable to most sectors, all of which are big users of contract services.
James Ostler, Managing Director of Information Service at National Britannia said, "Major organisations can no longer run the risk of employing contractors who are not able to prove that they have sound health and safety policies. More companies need to understand the importance of adopting good risk management in the way that ION has done. The firms’ high standard has set an example, which hopefully will be followed by other companies within the sector".
Under the SAFEcontractor system, businesses undergo a vetting process, which examines health and safety procedures and their track record for safe practice. Those companies meeting the high standard are included on a database, which is accessible to registered users only via a website, www.safecontractor.com.
Employer-organisations who sign up to the scheme can access the database, which enables them to vet potential contractors before they even set foot on site. These employers agree that, as users of the scheme, they will engage only those who have received accreditation.
Over eighty major nation-wide businesses, from several key sectors, have signed up to use the scheme when selecting contractors for services such as building, cleaning, maintenance, refurbishment or electrical and mechanical work.

Duty of Care...
Because of the Approved Codes of Practice January 2001 - ACOPs (L8) the Responsible Person for any premises has to ensure all ACOP (L8) requirements are complied with – sooner rather than later. The emphasis and significance is not only what Ion can do for you but what the requirements say should be done. As with all things budgets have to be measured to include for those requirements but not all budgets can allow for the works being done now and therefore sometimes the task is missed or forgotten.
To that end Ion have just completed a survey of all contracts by reviewing what we do for our customers and, (what is equally important), what our customers don’t do but what is required.
Ion found the water Risk Assessments in a considerable number if premises to be overdue. This has now been highlighted to the client – the Responsible Person – who has now taken the necessary steps to comply. Whether Ion carry our the work or not we have a Duty of Care to our customer.
Ion Duty of Care does not stop at Risk Assessments. We shall continue to advise and recommend what ACOP (L8) requirements are relevant and best suit our customers needs. In order to assist our customers awareness of some descriptions, Ion have included a

New Kids on the Block
The first new kid was actually recruited several months ago (I did say we were playing catch up). To use the term ‘new kid’ is a big stretch of the imagination but he has a youthful heart. Bruce Temple has known Paul and Ian for a good number of years and when offered the opportunity to sign up he did not hesitate. Bruce brings a wealth of experience in Facilities Management and in particular M&E Building Services. He obviously has little experience in News Letters as I’m actually writing this…
Our next new kid is Chris Henderson. Chris has now moved over to the sales team headed by Ian Drain having served many years with Ion as, apprentice service engineer, full service engineer and lastly, environmental technician. Over the years Chris has demonstrated an excellent grasp of water & environmental management and service, plus an excellent approach and care to all Ion customers with a great focus in the development of their needs and requirements strategy. Since starting this newsletter, Chris has responded well to his new challenges and customers are already demonstrating their trust in his attitude and advice.
